I worked with and for Jesse for over 20 yrs he was not only a great boss but a good friend.  I cherish the times we socialized together and the hunting and fishing trips were great , I’m proud to have been a friend.  God Bless,

 The past year has been flooded with rich memories of Jesse, of other old friends, of adventures  and of favored old dogs. I guess old men hold to those thoughts like it'll keep them young.

This old man keeps Jesse, his family and our other old friends on a prayer card --- and visits it daily.


Sorry for your loss. I got to do some hunting with Jesse at the ol Pelican hole and took him out on the marsh a few times. Cooked great breakfasts before the hunt and it was never a dull moment with that man. He will be missed.

I met Jesse a few years ago in Apache Junction AZ.  He was always so nice.  He loved to talk about fishing and sports.  What a special person.  He is going to be missed.

I first encountered Jesse years ago when dining at the restaurant on Ingersoll.  I later applied and was hired to work at the new Jesse’s West when it was opening.  Jesse was a pleasure to work for and with.  He had a heart of gold and a smile that never ended.  He loved his fishing & hunting.  I also, worked alongside his children who displayed similar characteristics and work ethics as their father.  What a tribute to him.  He will be missed by me and countless others whose lives he touched.  My thoughts and prayers to his family and all those who knew him & will miss him.🙏💔

An old quail hunting log tells me the first day I hunted with Jesse was December 4, 1975.  An early limit shoot in Missouri with Roy Riley and a stop to chase some Iowa birds on the way home. No half-day pursuits with Jess!

That was the first of countless days shared in fields, blinds, boats and hunting/fishing camps for the next 33 years until I moved from Iowa. 

The outdoors formed a bond, but Jess made it more than that.  He was the bigger-than-life character who worked to wring all the life he could out of the time he had....and he pulled you along with him.  And I loved it!

I miss him greatly and offer my condolences to all the family.  And I'll get there to say my goodbyes Saturday.

For nearly 40 years I have been dining at Jesse's Embers and for a large part of that time, Jesse was at the door to greet me whether it was lunch or dinner.  He always had a smile and a good word.

The last time I saw Jesse was at the restaurant's anniversary party which I was honored to help host the event.

I will remember Jesse with the fondest of thoughts.  He was an institution and he ran the best damned restaurant in town.

For over fifty years of my life Jesse was always around. He will be missed tremendously by all who knew him and had the opportunity to spend any amount of time with Jesse. I learned more about life and being outdoors from him and my dad in the times we ran all across Northern Missouri chasing quail and Riverton waiting on ducks. I also learned the location of every good home-town restaurant in three states because Jesse could sniff them out. He was a great teacher and always had time for me. I am sad for Helen and his kids, but somehow a good thought will always be there when I remember him.  This is a picture of the last Duck hunt I had with him in Riverton - December 2009. Peace to him and the family.

Jessie will be missed ,it was pleasure to take care of him and know him .Having fun memories of his personality .

I remember when you lived on the corner from me in Superstition Sunrise RV Park. You would sit in your boat parked in the driveway and tie flies all day long!
 We would tease you asking if you're catching anything!

Lived on 9th Street just two doors down from Jesse (Dick, as he was in his youth, as his dad was Jesse, but of course, Mr. Roush to we kids.)  Remember well, warm, summer nights with the windows open, hearing someone out in the yard.  And my Dad would say;  "oh that's just Dick looking for night crawlers"  Rest in peace dear friend from my youth.  

He will be missed by many thoughts and prayers   To all of u! Nurse from good Sam 

Jesse will be greatly missed. He left behind so many wonderful memories ….with his big smirk and smile…especially when he spoke of his love for the great outdoors and all his family .  I am so thankful that Jesse was a part of all our lives.  May you all find peace in knowing how loved Jesse was.  God bless you all .

So sorry to hear about the passing of Jesse.  As you know I worked for Jesse for 24 years.  He always treated me great , the best boss one could have.  We were also friends as we did things together away from work.  He taught me so much about hunting and fishing.  I also remember the fun we had at ISU games and going to Blue Jays.
