Richard Jesse Roush, 87, passed away Monday, July 5, 2021. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines. There will be a visitation and lunch directly after the service at the church. A private burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Jesse was born June 7, 1934, in West Des Moines, IA to Jesse and Verble (Graham) Roush. He grew up in West Des Moines and graduated from Valley High School. Jesse went on to Iowa State University and studied entomology. He was an avid Iowa State sports fan and loved the Chicago Cubs. After his service in the Army and his college graduation, he went into the vending business and later opened the Hawkeye club in downtown Des Moines. A few years later he opened one of the oldest steakhouses in Iowa called Jesse’s Embers. There his legend and legacy grew. Although Jesse loved the restaurant business, his true passion was in hunting and fishing.
Jesse is survived by his wife of 25 years, Helen; children, Rick (Mandy) Roush, Rob (Wendi) Roush, Roni (John) Benson and Raney McLaughlin; along with eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Noel Chladek, Jonas (Amber) Chladek and seven step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Don Roush; sisters, Doris Roush Friar, Ruth Roush Hughes; and his stepdaughter, Genelle Valentine.
