Richard Joel Goodman passed away at age 80 on August 28, 2023 after a long battle with cancer with his family by his side. Rick was born January 9, 1943 in Milan, Tennessee to Reuben Goodman and Mary McNeil/Tucker Goodman. When we remember Rick Goodman, four words come to mind to describe his life: Service, Fun, Family and Positivity.
Service
Rick served our country for 20 years. He earned a Purple Heart and many other honors in service. After his return, his service was directed to family, friends and employees. Whether it was helping a neighbor, supporting an employee, contributing to the St. Mary’s Fire Station or helping his daughters out with anything they needed at home (using his mechanical and engineering skills), he was always just a call away.
Fun
Rick and Merrillyn are known for their many adventures with family and friends. Traveling, parties at Rocky Ridge Farm, barbecues, and the annual Labor Day event are cherished memories for many. Early on, he earned the endearing name of “Captain Chaos” after getting stuck in the mud on the mule with six kids on board. Rick loved a good party, reveled in entertaining and driving his Corvette.
Family
Rick’s dedication to family was unparalleled. First and foremost is his love and devotion to Merrillyn, his wife and the love of his life. Together they navigated leading a successful business (DEMCO Inc.) and a growing family. They were partners in everything and held hands until the night he passed. Rick’s pride and joy, next to his daughters, Karen and Nancy whom he would drop everything for, are his two grandsons, Logan and Garrett Stiles. He taught them life lessons at the farm and was an amazing storyteller, especially when he tucked them into bed as children.
Positivity
Rick has always been a positive person but through his battle with cancer, he was a shining example of what positivity really is. Those who cared for him stated that he was “Superman”, never complained and always treated others with respect and appreciation. This is a valuable life lesson for us all. Rick is survived by his wife, Merrillyn Goodman; daughters, Karen (Kevin) Stiles and Nancy Campbell; and grandsons, Logan Stiles and Garrett Stiles; siblings, Nan (Neil) Vitense, Myrt (Burly) McIntyre, Joe (Beckie) Goodman and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Tom Goodman, Dan & Betty Goodman, Becky Mathis, Paul Goodman, David Goodman & Sarah Rachel Goodman.
Memorial contributions can be sent to Saint Mary's Fire Department, PO Box 95, St Mary's, IA 50241 or the Pink Tractor Foundation, 3845 G50 Hwy, St. Charles, IA 50240.
The primary purpose of the corporation is the research, detection, prevention, and treatment of cancer, including but not limited to breast cancer, with focus on cancer patients and cancer survivors located in central Iowa.
Rest in peace, Superman.
