Mary Van Deventer, 97, died Monday, December 23, 2013 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, December 28, 2013 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines, with a memorial service immediately following at 2 p.m.
Mary Elizabeth Day was born February 2, 1916 in Yuma, CO, the second daughter of John and Mary Day. Mary graduated from Fountain Green High School in Fountain Green, IL and received her Bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois State Teacher’s College. Mary was united in marriage to Herbert C. Van Deventer in September 1941. They moved to Des Moines in 1948, and made it their home, raising two sons. Mary was active in the Drake Dames, PEO-Chapter KM, D.A.R. and the Builders Class at First United Methodist Church. She was also a long-time member and past president of the Des Moines Women’s Club. She loved her family, gardening and arranging flowers.
Mary is survived by her sons, Herbert Jr. (Lita Krowech) and Charles (Karen Van Hamme); grandsons, Todd (Amy), Ted (Lisa), Erik and Alex; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Acres-John’s Harbor Unit, in memory of Mary.
