West Des Moines, Iowa
Linda was born on October 21, 1940 in West Des Moines, Iowa to Ronald and Phyllis (Clegg) Hallock. She died Sunday, June 19, 2011 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Her visitation will be from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 24th Street and Ashworth Road in West Des Moines. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 24, 2011 at the church.
Growing up, Linda lived in Fairfield, Iowa, then Clinton, Iowa and back to Fairfield, as her father’s jobs changed. The family moved to West Des Moines in 1955, and in 1958, Linda graduated from Valley High School. While there, she met Lawrence Anderson and the two were married on December 22, 1962, her parents 25th wedding anniversary.
She attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing learning basic nursing and later, trained with her uncle, Dr. James Beal, learning medical laboratory procedures, in preparation for first job at Des Moines General Hospital. Later, she worked at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, retiring as a Unit Secretary in the hospital’s Coronary Intensive Care Unit, in December, 2003 after nearly 15 years.
Linda and Larry traveled to both coasts during his active duty in the Army, returning to West Des Moines in 1965. They joined St. Timothy’s later that year and remain members there. In 1967, Linda joined the Kappa Chi chapter of the philanthropic sorority, Phi Tau Omega, served all chapter officer positions and participated in nearly all the chapter’s activities. Annual PTO conventions, complete with some song and dance routines, provided many great memories.
Linda touched the lives of many people in very caring ways and daily, placed the wellbeing of others above her own. She enthusiastically worked on church and sorority projects, culminating in three church mission trips to New Orleans following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She served as chair of St. Timothy’s flower guild since its inception some 15 years ago, arranging flowers for the altar and many other special occasions. She had a special talent and passion for arranging flowers.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her aunts, Wanda Beal, Winifred Huffman, Bess Faber and Gwendolyn Hallock and her uncles, Dean Clegg and Scott Hallock.
Cherishing her memory are her husband, Larry; sons, Jeffrey (Jill) Anderson of Naperville, IL and Steven (fiancée Shari Rogers) of Waukee; grandchildren, Nicholas and Lauren Anderson of Naperville and Ellyse and Ethan Rogers of Waukee; her sister, Kathie (Mark) Lutter and her brother, Ronald (Sue) Hallock, both of West Des Moines; her stepmother, Cora Hallock of Des Moines; her uncle, Dr. James Beal; and nephews, Brian (Amy) Lutter of Grimes and Jeremy (Susan) Bingaman of Ankeny. The lights of her life, her grandchildren, gave her the prized and highly-enjoyed nickname of “Big Gramma.”
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Linda’s name be made to St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 1020 - 24th Street, West Des Moines, Iowa.
