Leah was born on January 31, 1969, in Waterloo, to Gary and Marilyn (Buhrow) Carter. She was united in marriage to Shawn Christopher Topliff on October 1, 1994, in Cedar Falls. Together they had two sons, Owen, 22, and Ethan, 19.
Leah graduated from Central High School in Waterloo in 1987 and later from La’ James Cosmetology school. For the past 15 years, she worked as a realtor for Iowa Realty in West Des Moines, and most recently, for Re/Max Precision Realty in Clive.
Leah is survived by her husband, Shawn; sons, Owen and Ethan of Urbandale; parents Marilyn Jasper of Cedar Falls, and Gary (Jackie) Carter of Winter Haven, FL; brother, Rich Carter of Denver; step-brothers Jon (Lisa) Jasper of Clarksville, TN, Marc (Vicki) Jasper of Cedar Falls, and Scott Jasper of Waterloo. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, John Jasper, and both her maternal and paternal grandparents.
Leah had the ability to light up a room with her smile and welcoming vibrant personality. She was a fiercely loyal wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. In their more than 26 years together, Leah and Shawn had a deep and passionate love for one another and shared an extraordinary bond few could comprehend. Her devotion and love for her sons were only matched by the lengths she would go to protect and nurture them.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 2, 2019, from 1-4 PM at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel, 801 19th St, West Des Moines, IA. A service for family and friends will be Monday, June 3, 2019, at 10 AM at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel.
