Joan Johnson

Harriett Joan Johnson, 93, of Urbandale, Iowa passed away on Friday, November 3, 2023. A committal service will be held Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 2:30 PM at the Resthaven Mausoleum, 801 - 19th St, West Des Moines, Iowa 50265.

Joan was born on December 23, 1929, in Ottumwa, IA, to parents Morris and Goldie B. (Bennett) McCarroll. She had one brother, James Harland McCarroll, who died in infancy.

Joan attended the University of Iowa and was employed at the College of Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery in Des Moines, as an administrative assistant to the college president, Leonard Azneer, before retiring at age 65. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, painting, traveling, and going to movies and dinner with friends. She was a member of the Purple Hat Club and Iowa Retired Teachers Organization. During her life, Joan resided in Ottumwa, Clinton, Davenport, Mason City, and Urbandale.

Joanis survived by her daughters, Karen Baumgart (Chris) of Columbia, MD, and Denise Martin of Des Moines; grandchildren, Laura Shaw (Joe) of Columbia, MD, Ryan Baumgart (Tess) of Denver, CO, and Jessica Brooks (Jared) of Aurora, CO, Matt (Lisa) Martin of Bondurant, Stephanie (Tommy) Carpenter of Des Moines; and great-grandchildren, Leo, Adrian, Larry, Lydia, Zach, Devonte, Tason, Tray and Leo.
