Irene Chia Galvan, 88, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines. A Funeral Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Church in Des Moines with burial of cremated remains at Glendale Cemetery at a later date.
Irene was born October 12, 1924 in Kasson, Minnesota to Fernando and Francisca (Vasquez) Chia. She was a seamstress for J.C. Penney and a member of Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Church. Irene enjoyed word search puzzles, Mexican novelas and spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Irene is survived by her son, Michael Galvan of Des Moines; daughter, Andrea Torres of Des Moines; special god-daughter, Linda Casas of Des Moines; eleven grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eleanor Dunham, Arlene (Louie) Cardines and Dorothy Guiol and two brothers, Sam (Joan) Chia and Fred (Vickie) Chia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ines Galvan; daughter, Rachel Ortiz and son, Phillip Galvan.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Church with a Rosary Service at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Arthritis Foundation.
