Dee was born March 24, 1918 in Spencer, Iowa, to A.O. and Ethel Cobbs. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines and Frances Shimer College in Mount Carroll, Illinois where she studied creative writing. She married Thomas Oliver Hobson of Coon Rapids, Iowa at the summer home of her parents at Lake Okoboji, Iowa, in 1938. They moved to Des Moines where she lived most of her life.
Dee enjoyed being a homemaker and mother of three daughters. Volunteer work was a part of her life. When her family was young, she worked as a secretary in her father’s manufacturing business. She loved to read about business and finances, child rearing and current events. Cooking nutritious meals was important to her. She enjoyed golf and water skiing. She helped her husband build a summer cabin on Lake Vermillion in northern Minnesota, doing all the work themselves. With the children grown, she returned to work as head of the baby department at the Merle Hay Younkers store. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian church in Des Moines and an active member of P.E.O. She was a strong, quiet woman. Often quoted to one of her daughters “Your mom is such a sweet person, so refined, always a lady”. She was also known to enjoy a good laugh and occasionally offered sage advice. She never passed up an opportunity to go and help her daughters when the grandchildren were born. After Tom’s death in 1983 she married John J. Sarcone. After his death she lived with her daughter Peggy in Waukee, Iowa and then with her daughter Patty in Spring, Texas.
Dee is survived by her twin daughters, Pam Samland (William) of Golden, CO, and Pat Unrau (Jerry) of Spring, TX, and daughter, Peg Dahlke (Chad Larson) of Waukee, IA; seven grandchildren: Wes, Wendy, Jeff (wife Judi), Jill, Luke, J.J. and Abbie, who knew her as Gramma “Hobcone”; and two great-grandchildren: Sarah and Maya May. She was preceded in death by two husbands and her younger brother, Gordon R. Cobbs.
A memorial has been established in Darrelene Hobson Sarcone’s name at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc., 5452 NE 22nd Street, Des Moines, IA 50313-2528.
