Alma Jean Lawson departed this life on July 23, 2023. Alma was born on July 11, 1938, to Henry and Beatrice Perkins in Bon-Wier, Texas. Alma was one of twelve children.
Alma Lawson accepted Jesus Christ into her life at an early age. Most of Alma's education was within the Beaumont, Texas school system graduating from Charlton Pollard High School in 1957. Alma's activities in high school were the Y-Teen Club, playing on the basketball team and singing in the school choir. She also took homemaking classes, where she found the love for creating delicious meals and desserts. Homemade ice cream and delicious pies were her specialty among the family. Her pies were so good, one Thanksgiving holiday a family member walked out with an entire lemon pie, (Alma made it known "they will never get another one").
Alma was united in Holy Matrimony with Joe Lawson on November 27, 1965. Alma affectionately called her husband "Joby". They purchased their first home and resided in La Puente, California. Joe and Alma celebrated 45 years of marriage before Joe's untimely passing on March 10, 2010. Alma was a loving mother to her sons Kelvin and Ken. Alma was a fighter, even through the pain, she was always known to say every morning "Made Another Day".
Alma's career of more than 30 years was helping special needs kids. Many of those years were spent as an Assistant Teacher at De Anza Elementary School in Baldwin Park, California.
Alma was very family oriented among her many interests she enjoyed going to Hollywood Park with sister Lillian Pope for horse races, meeting her sister Betty Wagner for bingo or staying home playing a game of dominoes with her Joby. Alma was a devoted bowler, through her many years of involvement in the bowling league, she gained many personal friends whom she adored as they did her. Alma accomplished a perfect bowling game on August 8, 1984 at West Covina Lanes.
Alma was a loving grandmother and cherished her grandkids more than anything in the world. She nurtured and cared for them and enjoyed being involved in their lives. She showered her grandkids with so much love and would always tell them "watch your surrounding always". Alma leaves behind two sons Kelvin E. Lawson, Ken Lawson; two stepsons Dr. Gregory Benjamin and Derek Lawson. Three daughters-in-law, Ana R. Lawson, Monique Lawson and Sheryl Benjamin. Twelve grandchildren. One sister Betty Wagner of Riverside, CA; two brothers Bobby Perkins of Carson, CA; Henry Perkins Jr. of Houston, TX, sisters-in-law Marva Perkins of Buckeye, AZ, Sue Perkins of Houston, TX and Linda Perkins of Inglewood, CA, nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
