During his teenage years he worked at the first In-N-Out drive through. He would tell stories of when he worked at the store. He enjoyed sharing those experiences of the early years of In-N-Out Burgers. In early 1953 he joined the Army and served in L Company 6th Infantry Regiment. He was honorably discharged in 1955 having earned a National Defense Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and an Army Occupation Medal as he was in Germany.

In 1960 he married Cecilia Baltazar. Together they had five children (Adeline, Barbara, Alfred, Steven and Monique). This year he would have been married to Cecilia for 64 years.
