San Juana De Los Santos—a longtime resident of Weslaco, Texas passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018. She was surrounded by her family as she passed and rejoined her parents Julio and Maria Alcala and nephew Gabriel Vela.
Born in 1944, Janie’s story began in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico. Her family left Mexico for better opportunities and a piece of the American Dream. With hard work and the support of her family, Janie earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Pan American University in 1977. She taught bilingual education at the Weslaco Independent School District where she eventually retired after 33 years of service. She enjoyed teaching but most of all she loved her students. It was truly her passion.
Janie was also passionate about her faith in God and her church family. She was a long-time parishioner of San Martin de Porres and devoted member of the Legion of Mary.
Janie was also passionate about her family. She is survived by her husband, Joe De Los Santos, Sr., Joe De Los Santos, Jr., Jay De Los Santos and James De Los Santos. She is also survived by her grandchildren Ricki, Isabella, Justine, Trey and Jacob and siblings Mary Gomez, Aurora Arrendo, Imelda Leon, Estella Alaniz, Martha Alcala, Julie Alcala and Albert Alcala.
Janie never met a stranger and gave the most amazing hugs. She loved people and deeply believed we should always strive to make a positive difference in everything we do.
