It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Israel Medrano Sr., 80, of Edcouch, Texas. Born on March 17, 1943 in Weslaco, TX, Israel was a migrant worker in Washington State and was also known as “El Avispon”. Israel was an alumnus from Edcouch-Elsa and one of the biggest supporters of “La Maquina Amarilla”. He attended football games, rain or shine, until he couldn’t any longer. In addition to his everlasting support to the team, Israel showed a lifelong commitment to his community. He served as a member of the Edcouch-Elsa School Board for 12 years, and was employed by Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers from 1974 - 2008. He took great pride in his work, and received several recognitions that honored his performance and servitude. Throughout this time, Israel’s family grew to include three loving children, Israel Medrano Jr., Jose Medrano, and Juliana Galvan.
Alongside his definitive role as a father, Israel was known for his compassion, humor, and the ability to brighten any room he walked into. He had a way of connecting with people that could only be described as unmatched and never turned down the opportunity to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. The way Israel lived his life allowed him to create a reputation of being a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Israel joined the Lord on December 14th, 2023, where he is predeceased by his mother and father, Juliana and Porfirio Medrano; his first wife, Eva Medrano; and two of his granddaughters, Serena and Estrella Galvan.
He is survived by his spouse, Margarita Medrano; his three children and their spouses, Israel Medrano Jr. (Celia), Jose Medrano (Yesenia), and Juliana Galvan (Diomar); his step-children and their spouses, Felipe Melchor (Ana), Janie Huerta (Luis), and Mary Ann Bañuelos (Ernie); his grandchildren, Erika Medrano, Kimberly Medrano, Alex Medrano, Alyssa Galvan, Jenica Galvan, and Diandra Galvan; and his sisters, Janie Leber (Tim), Luisa Gonzalez (Tony), Mary Guajardo (Raul), and Estella Macias (Jorge).
