Steve was born March 1, 1948, the son of Donald Doyle Brown and Margaret Mary Brown. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Brooklyn and the Long Island suburb of Hicksville.
Steve is survived by Kathy, his wife of 48 years; two daughters, Kait Levine-Brown (Ben Levine-Brown) of Worcester, Mass., and Meghan Whitmarsh-Brown (Joe Whitmarsh) of Albuquerque, N.M.; his granddaughter, Isobel Levine-Brown of Worcester, Mass.; four brothers, Donald of Tuckahoe, N.Y., Bob of Eau Claire, Wis., Tim of Canastota, N.Y., and Jerry of Nevada City, Calif.; and one sister, Kathleen Brown McNally of Hicksville, N.Y. Survivors also include many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws, and countless friends.
Steve graduated from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1971, and began his career in education by teaching elementary school in Dutchess County. Later he completed a master’s degree and three years of doctoral studies in special education at Syracuse University.
He then worked for the New York State Education Department in Albany helping to draft and pass major legislation to provide protection for emotionally disturbed students and services for students with other types of disability. He later traveled the state training teachers in the implementation of those services.
After Steve and his family moved to Virginia in 1995, he served for many years as the headmaster at Different Drum, a nonsectarian alternative high school in Chantilly, Va., for students with special educational needs.
A celebration of Steve’s life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, at Wellfleet Preservation Hall, located at 335 Main St.
Preceding the celebration, there will be a private family visitation at Nickerson Funeral Home, which is directly across the street from Preservation Hall.
