Miriam “Mim” Johnson Dickinson passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord on March 24, 2022 at the age of 96 in La Jolla, California. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and dear friend.
She met her future husband, Richard Kampfe Dickinson, while standing in line to register for classes at Syracuse University as a college freshman in 1943. They married after her graduation. Their loving marriage of 67 years included two children, Tammy Colvin (Terry Colvin) and Richard K Dickinson II (May Yin Dickinson). There are five grandchildren (Ephraim, David, Miriam, Peter and Elizabeth) and six great grandchildren (Paul, Quinn, Evren, Joaquin, Emil and Theo). Mim is survived by all of them.
Mim and Dick early in their marriage they lived in Brooklyn during Dick’s medical residency and in Japan during his military service. Most of their lives were spent in Syracuse where they raised their family and belonged to a strong community of friends. Their summers were spent on Great Pond in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Mim had spent her childhoods in Wellfleet and their home on the pond was their refuge where the family gathered and enjoyed each other’s companionship. In 2013 they moved to Springfield Virginia to be near family. Dick died in 2013. Mim moved to La Jolla California to be near family six months ago.
Mim had a deep love for animals. She was a good horseback rider as a teenager and regularly enjoyed dogs and cats as pets. Most recently, she found comfort in the company of her beloved cat, Chloe.
Along with her family, Mims’ great passion in life was God himself as revealed in Jesus Christ. Mim had a strong and direct conversion experience in her mid-40s that was life-changing for her.
Mim earned a Master’s degree in English and worked outside her home as an English teacher and also worked at Upstate Medical Center for many years on the chaplaincy team, praying with and for patients. She and her husband were members of The Gideons International and she loved to share the Good News about Jesus and give little blue Bibles to folks she met.
There will be a memorial service for her on Cape Cod.
