Virginia’s parents were from German families that immigrated to the United States from Russia and participated in the Oklahoma Land Rush in 1889. Virginia was the third of seven children in a family of wheat farmers. She only spoke German until she learned English in the first grade at school. Virginia graduated from Fargo High School with high honors, was Valedictorian of her class and was awarded three college scholarships. After graduation, she went to live with her sister Laurine in Pampa, TX, and took a summer job at the Crystal Palace (a confectionary).
The Crystal Palace was a hang-out for the local service men. It was there that Virginia met the love of her life, Charles P. Holt. Sergeant Charles Holt enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and was an airplane dispatcher stationed at the Pampa Airfield. He visited the candy store quite often. A month into the meeting he had an airtime leave and went to see his parents in Houston. When he returned, he surprised her with an engagement ring. He was expecting overseas duty call at any time and wanted the assurance she would be waiting for him. They were married March 3, 1944, by the Post Chaplain at the Pampa Airfield.
After his discharge from the Air Force, Charles returned to Houston with his bride where they remained and raised their three children.
In 1994, Charles and Virginia, along with many family members and friends, celebrated fifty years of marriage. In 2004, another celebration was planned for their sixtieth anniversary, but the Lord took Charles a week before. They had a lifetime of love with a wonderful family and now Charles is greeting his bride once again in Heaven.
Virginia was a loving mother, a wonderful Mammo to her grandchildren, an excellent seamstress, and a great cook. She enjoyed reading and kept a beautiful garden. She would tell jokes from years ago that we had all heard before but each time she told them it was so funny everyone laughed. Charles called her ‘Little Mother’. She was 5’2 but had a huge presence and a personality larger than life. She dearly loved her family and friends, and they loved her. She will be greatly missed by all.
