Vernell Jones, affectionately known as “Nanny”, was born on April 14, 1930, in Sherman, Texas, to Homer Asa and Alice Mae Belle Wooten. Vernell married Alvin Lee “Al” Jones, the love of her life, in 1946, and they were happily married for seventy-one years.
Al and Vernell moved to Houston in 1950 and were members of Life Tabernacle church where they made a host of lifetime friends. They loved to fish and take road trips and travelled all over the United States. Vernell was artistically gifted and taught herself to crochet, paint, make porcelain dolls and all sorts of crafts that she loved creating and making her whole life. Her family have a multitude of precious handmade treasures from her many talents.
She leaves behind a legacy of how to live for the Lord your entire life and how to love your husband and family. She truly exemplified the life of a Proverbs 31 woman. She is worth far more than rubies and her children arise and call her blessed.
She was beloved and cherished by many who called her Nanny. Her wisdom, sense of humor and witty remarks will always be remembered. She was an exceptional mother to her children and to many others who were also recipients of her love. She will be greatly missed, but we rejoice knowing that we will see her again in Heaven.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Marsha Gail (James) Twentier and her daughter-in-law, Sandra (Mark) Jones. She was a fabulous Nanny to nine grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great grandchildren. She was also a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Lee “Al” Jones, on July 8, 2017, her daughter, Suzanne Denise Jones, on January 25, 2004, and her son, Mark Alvin Jones, on March 26, 2022.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Nanny’s life on Monday, April 14, 2025, at Life Church, 5125 Preston Avenue in Pasadena, TX. Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM followed by a service at 7:00 PM. Interment will be at Brookside Memorial Park, Section 28, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX, 77039, on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM.
The family is grateful for and overwhelmed and blessed by the outpouring of support from those who knew and loved Nanny. The family would also like to thank the staff of Thomas Manor Assisted Living & Memory Care Facility and Accent Hospice for the loving care they provided.
