Nelson Kenneth Polk, age 102, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2020. He was born March 18, 1918 in Killeen, Texas to Clyde Layfette and Dora Viola Polk. He married Blessie Lee McLeod on January 30, 1943 who preceded him in death in 2010.
Nelson, who was known to his friends by the nickname he picked up in the Army, Chicken - that evolved into Chicky-Bird. It was said that the nickname was a joke because he would never smoke, drink or curse. However, this said a lot about the person he really was. As most anyone who knew him would say, up until the day he passed away, he was the sweetest, nicest, kindest man they ever met. He was a fantastic gardener and always had a yard full of beautiful flowers and pecan trees.
What many don't know was that he loved to crochet blankets and throws. Nelson was the only son of seven children so along with his sisters he learned to crochet from his mother. He made hundreds of blankets for his friends and family over the years. He was very close to his three grandchildren and enjoyed making them blankets for special occasions but was especially proud of the ones he made for each of the great-grandchildren when they were born. Nelson was a volunteer at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center beginning in 1978. He volunteered 5500+ hours and received the Volunteer of the Year Award twice. He also crocheted over 50 baby blankets for the first New Year's baby boy and girl each year until he turned 100.
Nelson joined Amoco Oil Company in 1945 when he returned from WWII and retired in 1978. After retirement, he and Blessie traveled the states in their RV and visited many countries including Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. He was a member of League City United Methodist Church since 1950.
Nelson is survived by his daughter Janet Kilcrease (Jim), granddaughter Kim Scott (John), grandsons Bill McCalla (Jenny), Greg McCalla (Sherry), great-grand children Darian Reynero, Ashley Flood, Hunter Scott, Hailey Scott, Brayden McCalla and Kinsley McCalla, sister Patricia Russ, and many nieces and nephews. All of these he loved dearly and touched their lives deeply.
A private family celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ForestParkEast-FHC.com for the Polk family.
