Mary Ellen McKay of League City, Texas, passed away at her home on February 1, 2022. She was born March 4, 1933, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Harold Orson Drody and Bernice Floyd Drody. She attended Jacksonville’s Landon High School and later graduated from Henry Grady High School after her family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Mary later moved to League City, Texas, in 1972 where she lived for most of her life.
Mary enjoyed living life to the fullest through a multitude of experiences with her family, co-workers and friends. She had a long-time career as an administrative assistant and training supervisor in Houston until she retired in 1996. Her passion for music and dance played an important part throughout her entire life. As an avid dancer, she performed on the Landon Lionettes Drill Team and later in her life, she joined several dancing clubs including the Country Cloggers, Square Dancers, the League City Line Dancers; and the Dance Tree Tappers. She sang her heart out in choirs from grade school to church congregations and joined Clear Lake’s Bay Area Chorus, which traveled Europe singing in some of the most famous cathedrals of the world including Notre Dame in Paris. She also played with several card and game groups including the Bunco Babes and the League City Seniors Friends.
Mary most enjoyed spending time with her family, children and grandchildren with whom she shared her unconditional love and joy of life during many trips, special occasions and family gatherings, especially the traditional Sunday morning breakfast of biscuits and gravy.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Ellis McKay. She is survived by her four children Bill, Charles, Doug and Linda; 10 grandchildren Brett, Brian, Margaret, Summer, Skyler, Alejandra, Heather, Jordan, Jackson and Jacob; and her three great-grandchildren August, Autumn and Roman. She is also survived by her sisters Margaret, Annette, Carol, and brother Hal; as well as countless extended family members and cherished friends.
Mary summed up her life best in this quote from her journal:
I give thanks to the Lord every morning and night for the life challenges given me during my lifetime and for the wonderful talented children and grandchildren that have joined me in all the happy experiences of daily life. AMEN!
