

Marie Jean Zapalac, 87, of Webster, Texas, passed away peacefully at Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital on Monday, January 13, 2025, surrounded by her daughters and son-in-law. Marie, also known as “Jeanie,” was born to Alfred and Adeline Bobcean on December 20, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan.
Marie graduated from Western High School in 1955. After High School she began working at Michigan Bell Telephone Company where she met her husband, with whom she had three daughters. Marie moved to Texas in 1978 and was remarried to Martin Zapalac, in 1995. She worked for several years in the retail industry and retired after many years of administrative work at Seabreeze Roofing Company.
Marie was an avid speller. In 8th grade, she won 1st place in a spelling bee and was awarded a dictionary with her name engraved in gold. Throughout her time, she enjoyed doing many arts and crafts; especially, wreath making. She also loved doing crossword puzzles and reading The Enquirer. Marie and Martin were devoted cat and dog lovers. During the 25 years they were married, they rescued dozens of dogs and gave them a heartwarming journey from despair to a life filled with love and compassion.
Marie recently moved to Brookdale Senior Living where she made many close friends. She was involved in many of the activities they offered and especially love playing Mexican Bingo. Her friends there will miss her dearly.
Marie is survived by her daughters, Diane Roark and husband, Larry, of Nacogdoches; Paula Williams and husband, Steve, of Friendswood; Sharon Heddles of League City; stepdaughter Marty Schiller and husband, Tracy, of Bellville; several loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She is also survived by her beloved dog, Bongo; and leaves behind many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Adeline Bobcean; husband, Martin Zapalac; sister, MaryLou Shaub; brother, Alfred Bobcean; and son-in-law, Burt Heddles.
