Maria Gloria Trevino

Maria “Gloria” Trevino, 82 years old, of Friendswood, TX, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2022. She was born in Mexico on February 7, 1940, to Herlindo and Leonor Gracia. She was married to Benito “Bennie” Trevino for 56 years.

Gloria grew up in Brownsville, TX, and moved to League City in her early twenties, where she worked as a dietician for The Methodist Hospital in The Medical Center. A couple of years later, she worked as a salesperson for Sears for a short time before beginning her long career as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. After 23 years, Gloria retired from the United States Postal Service and began her new life of doing whatever she wanted, as she would say!

While in League City, she met a young man named Bennie at the League City Park. Let’s just say that she was not impressed. 😊 Somehow … some way … he won her heart and shortly thereafter asked her to marry him. They only dated for 6 months before getting married on April 3, 1966. After a year and a half of marriage, they welcomed their first child, a son named Joel. Next came their favorite child, a daughter named Ruthie. (Gee, I wonder who wrote the obituary.) Last but not least came another son, Sammy.

The one word that Gloria would say made their marriage last 56 years is “God.” Their membership at Bay Area Church began in May 1966, a month after they were married. They were faithful members and taught the Spanish Sunday school class at that time until they retired from this position in February of 2022. Gloria’s love for God was very evident. No one ever had to wonder who came first in her life. As trials began to plague the Trevino family in 1986 with kidney failures for Joel and Sammy, Gloria’s faith grew stronger than ever; and she was an incredible example of how to let God take control and trust Him and His ultimate plan. Gloria knew the power of prayer, and she used it on a daily basis. She would pray for her children by name every day, as well as her friends and family.

If you’ve ever been to the Trevino home, you know that you were not going to leave the same. Gloria was going to make sure you left 10 pounds heavier! There was always plenty of food on the table, including frijoles, tortillas, enchiladas, and tamales, because you were “family.”

The one thing Gloria loved the most was spending time with her family. Even when she wasn’t feeling well and was in bed, as soon as she heard one of her kids coming in the door, she would put her shoes on and slowly make her way to the kitchen table in order to visit. Sunday lunches were the best for her. Every single Sunday after church, her children and grandchildren would gather at her house to share a meal together. It was full of laughter … lots of laughter. Her laugh was so contagious. It was hard to stop laughing because Gloria’s laugh would make you laugh harder. Another favorite pastime of hers was to watch Astros games on TV with Bennie. They never missed a game. She knew all the players’ names, which came in handy when she would yell at the players through the TV.

When Gloria entered the hospital in April, little did she know that the day was near when she would finally meet her Lord and Savior. Gloria had been preparing for and, more importantly, LONGING for this day. So when doctors gave the news that she had days to live, she was not worried because she believed that Jesus came as a baby, she believed that He died on the cross, she believed that He rose from the grave, she asked Jesus to forgive her of her sins, and she asked Jesus to save her. Because of that, Gloria had no doubt that when she died, she would spend eternity in Heaven. For her family, this brings peace and comfort, knowing that where she is, there is no pain, there is no sorrow, there is no sickness. She is in the presence of The Almighty. God is good. He is faithful. Thank you, Jesus, for the cross.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Herlindo and Leonor Gracia), brother (Ovidio Gracia) and sister (Angelica Garcia).

She is survived by her husband (Bennie Trevino), son (Joel Trevino) and wife (Juli) of Webster, TX; daughter (Ruthie Velasquez) and husband (Jason) of League City, TX; son (Sam Trevino) and wife (Lacye) of Fort Worth, TX; brother (Oscar Gracia) and wife (Patti) of Las Vegas, NV; sister (Elizabeth Fernandez) and husband (Santiago) of Houston, TX; brother (Abel Gracia) and wife (Josie) of Dickinson, TX; sister (Becky Ybarra) and husband (Toby) of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren: Kimberly Trevino, Mia Velasquez, Bryan Garcia, Brittany Garcia, Brock Griffin, and Brendon Griffin; great-grandchildren: Brayden and Baelynn Garcia; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Funeral arrangements are as follows: Visitation is at Bay Area Church (4800 West Main Street, League City, TX 77573) on Saturday, July 16th. 9 a.m. is family visitation. 10 a.m. is family/friends visitation. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., also at Bay Area Church. There will be a procession to Forest Park East Funeral Home & Cemetery (21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, TX 77598) immediately following the funeral service for a very short graveside gathering. Lunch will be provided at the church after the graveside gathering. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Gloria’s name to Lifetree Counseling Center c/o Bay Area Church, 4800 West Main Street, League City, TX 77573.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to our family, friends, and Bay Area Church family for the outpouring of love, countless meals provided, and the many prayers said on our behalf during this time. We would also like to thank our Enhabit Home Health and Hospice family (Trish, Amy, Aven, Ayo, Teresa, Addie, and Christina) for walking us through these last two months. The love you have shown will never be forgotten.
