Margaret (“Marge”) Eleanor McCune, resident of Coppell, TX, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on December 18, 2022. She was born in Stark, FL to Stewart and Eleanor Jensen. Marge then lived in Cincinnati, Ohio and Massachusetts before moving to Hialeah, FL, where she spent the majority of her childhood. She graduated from Miami High School in 1947 and worked as a receptionist for Eastern Airlines. She met Dyle McCune, an Air Force pilot, in 1949 and was married in September 1951. Marge enjoyed being an Air Force wife and mother, raising three children while living in such places as Puerto Rico; San Rafael, CA; Mobile, AL; Charleston and Greenville, SC; Savanah, GA; Frankfurt, Germany; and Dover, Delaware. Following her husband’s retirement from the Air Force in 1968, she moved and built a home in Clear Lake City, TX, where she lived for the next forty years. Marge enjoyed spending time with her family and later her grandchildren, hosting many family holidays over the years; she later relocated to Dallas, TX to be near her family.
Her children all share wonderful memories of her work to raise money for various school activities; specifically, Carol and David remember how she worked tirelessly to raise money for the 1973 Clear Lake High School choir to travel to Europe. Marge oversaw public relations and spent many hours writing articles for the News Citizen and other publications to solicit donations and support for all the chorus concerts. She also loved attending and cheering on her children in all their various activities, including baseball and drill team. She also enjoyed her time volunteering at Clear Lake Hospital, where she worked until she turned her attention to care for her own husband after he suffered a heart attack in 1982.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Marge and her husband traveled by RV around the country; she especially loved summer RV trips with her grandchildren as well as traveling to the Midwest and researching family genealogy. Her most favorite trip, however, was a large caravan trip, where she and Dyle spent six weeks with a large group traveling to and around Alaska. Marge loved all kinds of travel, including memorable trips to Italy and Japan; she especially enjoyed cruises, her favorite was a 50th wedding anniversary cruise with all her family.
Marge also enjoyed all sports, but especially loved baseball and the Houston Astros. She kept a small notebook by her chair to record baseball statistics, listening to every Astros game on the radio, sometimes while the rest of the family was watching TV in the same room. She could recite all the players as well as their statistics. In addition, she enjoyed cake decorating, making specialty birthday cakes, including many doll cakes. Marge also enjoyed spending time with the family on their boat watching her children water ski. Once her own children grew up, she cherished time with her seven grandchildren, often traveling to visit those that lived out of state, attending birthday parties and activities, and hosting family gatherings in her home. Marge especially enjoyed taking her family out to eat; Mexican and margaritas were her favorites!
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Dyle D. McCune, and her parents, Stewart and Eleanor Jensen of Lake Worth, FL. Marge will be deeply missed by her children: Debbie McCune Silvia and husband, Ray; Carol McCune Castelhano and husband, Dean; and David McCune and wife, Robin.
She was adored by her grandchildren: Lisa Stone and husband, Brian; Steve Herrington; Jacqueline McCune Tapella and husband, Travis; Kayti Young and husband, Austin; Chris Herold and wife, Colleen Fredericks; Sean McCune and husband, Ryan Haggerty; and Ben Herold and wife, Saghar Esfandiarifard. In addition, Marge was treasured by her 13 great grandchildren: Madelyn and Jonathan Stone; Tristan and Liam Herrington; Khalid, Nyla, Jad, and Noor Young; Landon, Juliette, Sophia, and Brielle Tapella; and Luke Herold. The family would like to thank Marge’s caregiver, Michelle Hirsch, as we are beyond grateful for her compassion and kindness in caring for our mother and grandmother over the last few years.
