It is with great sorrow to announce that our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Joseph Niên Văn Nguyễn, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the age of 96. He was born in Ninh Bình, Việt Nam on April 30, 1928, and married to his old friend, Mary Hoa Thị Vũ, in July of 1947.
Before the fall of Saigon to the communist regime in 1975, he was a successful businessman in the construction, insurance and hospitality industries. After arranging for his seven children, granddaughter, and son-in-law to flee the communist regime by boat, Mr. Nguyễn, his wife and his son, Liêm Thanh Nguyễn, reunited with the rest of the family in Houston, Texas in 1983. With his background in business, Mr. Nguyễn opened a small, family-owned and operated French bakery near downtown Houston and continued with other ventures.
He was a dedicated parishioner of the Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic church located in southeast Houston and was one of the founders of this church. He was also an active member of The Archdiocese of Galveston–Houston and received several recognitions for his contributions to the Diocese.
His survivors include seven children, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Joseph Niên Văn Nguyễn was preceded in death by his wife Mary Hoa Thị Vũ, his oldest daughter Mary Bích Hợp Thị Nguyễn, his grandson Philip Jonathan Phi Nguyễn, and his son Sylvester Tuấn (Tú) Thanh Nguyễn.
