Hsi was born on April 7, 1934 in Fujo, Fujian, China and was one of five children. He grew up in China in the shadow of World War II and the Chinese Civil War. He was fortunate to leave on the last ship from China to Taiwan before the Bamboo Curtain fell across China. He attended National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan and later met and married Tai Hua Wu. He received his MS degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Missouri in 1963.
He worked most of his life on fusion research at Fermilab in IL and Princeton’s Plasma Physics Lab in NJ. He spent his life helping others and opened his home to many relatives and friends. He spent his retired years watching after his grandchildren.
Hsi is preceded in death by his father, mother and two of his brothers. He is survived by his wife, Tai Feng, and four children, Susan Ballarini of Houston, Peter Feng of Houston, David Feng of Boston and Tanya Feng of Austin. He is also survived by his sisters, Shirley Wang of Houston and Anna Su Chen of Los Angeles and many other loving relatives, cousins, grandchildren.
Due to concerns about COVID-19, the family is unable to celebrate Hsi’s life as they had initially planned. To minimize the spread of virus, a limited viewing for family members will be held at Forest Park East Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held next year around Father’s Day.
