Hazel Marie Smith (Permenter), 92, a resident of Pearland, Texas, passed away on May 1, 2024. She was born in Shelbyville (Huxley, Rural route), Texas to Oma Holt (Permenter) and raised by her loving grandparents Alfred Lee Permenter and Josie Bass Permenter.
Hazel was born May 30, 1931, and she was raised in Center, Texas. Hazel is from a very humble beginning. Through the years she worked to improve herself and raise her children to be kind, honest, and hard-working individuals. Her last employer was Schumacher Co. Inc. She started in 1972 as a secretary and retired in 2009 as President of Schumacher Co. Inc. and the 2 subsidiaries, Spray Metal, Inc. & Dixie Electro Plating, Co. Inc.
Smart, confident, strong, honest, hardworking – We could go on for days. She was absolutely beautiful and stunning, from the inside out. She had an infectious laugh and a positive attitude all her life. She was a trustworthy lady with a kind and gentle soul. Granny didn’t do anything halfway, she did it with maximum effort, class, and elegance. She was an example for the younger family members to emulate and strive to be a better person. Her memory exemplifies the passing of a true Titan.
She was an avid shopper for antiques, had a love for fine arts, and enjoyed spending time with her family, and going to the ballet and plays at the Hobby Center. She admired the rose garden around her yard that everyone enjoyed and called it the Rose Garden Home.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Oma Permenter Sample Holt; sisters Oleta Langford and Juanita Chandler; son, Don Hailey; husband of 45 years Calvin Smith, and first husband Earnest Hailey.
She is survived by children: Jackie Wilson and husband, Paul; Clara Hailey, Jimmie Jack Hailey and wife Judy; grandchildren: Calvin Hailey; Tommy Harrington, and wife Aimee, Jerry Harrington and wife Donita; Angie Mitchell, and husband Tommy; Hazel Buckalew, and husband Colt; Barbara Wilmoth, and husband Darrell; Brian Hailey, and wife Becky; Matt Hailey and wife Cindy; Jason Harrington, and wife Suseinn; Corey Harrington, and wife Lisa; 25 great-grandchildren; along with numerous relatives and a host of friends we consider family.
Jackie wants to thank her husband, Paul, and all her children; sister-in-law Clara, and brother Jimmie and sister-in-law Judy for all of the help, love, and caring for my mother, especially the last 2 years. Also want to thank Maria Balderas (friend and caretaker for 6 years), Maggie’s Professionals, and Vantage Hospice for all the care provided during this time.
