Harley was welcomed into this world on October 7, 1923 in Salem Massachusetts, as the only son to the late Gertrude (Hoyt) Tate and Lawson F. Tate of Gloucester Massachusetts. He leaves two sisters Shirley Dean and Elaine DelTorchio of Gloucester Massachusetts and many nieces and nephews and many friends who will mourn his passing.
Harley was educated in Gloucester Massachusetts Schools, attended North Eastern University and received a degree from the University of Houston. Mr. Tate served six years as a World War II Navy Veteran in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After the war he chose to remain in Houston, marrying the Love of his life, a true southern belle with blonde hair and blue eyes, Joyce Hebert. He stayed at the University of Houston serving as a theater Manager and a Sailing Instructor until his retirement.
His life was marked by many acts of kindness and benevolence to those around him. He often could be heard to respond when asked How he was doing, with “I’m ok, but I’ll get over it!” He now is truly over it, enjoying his forever with the one who knows Him best and loves him most.
Harley will be remembered by his life-long love of sailing and the sea, his love of conversation and a good libation with friends, and his gentle, peaceful relationship with his god.
Memorial donations may be made to the Compassionate Pregnancy Center at PO Box 658, Seabrook, Texas 77586.
