Gordon Spencer died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family the morning of June 27, 2010. He was born in San Francisco, CA on February 18, 1934. Gordon a long-time resident of League City, TX was one of the original 600 hired when NASA began implementing President Kennedy’s challenge of placing an American on the moon in Houston. He retired from NASA after years of working in propulsion (Gemini), crew systems (Apollo), and on various aspects of Shuttle programs. He participated in the organizational efforts that resulted in Friendswood United Methodist Church, Bay Area Chorus, Clear Lake Masons, Pearland Sportsman Club, and other organizations. Gordon in retirement had many hobbies that kept him busy. Gordon is survived by second wife Patsy, daughter Adele Herzfeld (Heinerich), son Charles DeWitt (Carole), son Kirk Spencer (Darla) and granddaughter Cassondra, son Keith Spencer (Teri) and grandson Theodore, daughter Sally Hand (JR), son John DeWitt, son Matt DeWitt (Katie) and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Other survivors include his beloved cousin Paul Gakle (Ginny), sister-in-law Dorothy Cosmi (Richard), and numerous relatives and friends.
Gordon was preceded in death by Barbara his wife of 49 years, parents Raymond and Eula Spencer, brother-in-law William Tindall, best friend Ralph Schumacher, and other family members.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Gordon’s life on Friday August 27th 7:00 p.m. at Forest Park Funeral home between Webster and League City. Cards of condolence may be directed through the funeral home and in-lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Shriner’s Burn Hospital in Galveston or a charity of your choice.
