Gene Alman Smith was born on June 28, 1932 at Memorial Hospital to parents, Phillip Alexander Smith and Virgie Mosel Bearden Smith. Gene was the middle child and his siblings include Joyce Adalene Smith Scanlin (Joe Pete), Kenneth Rue Smith (Helen and Janelle), Laquita Nell Smith Gradig (Leo), Philip Larry Smith (Terry Marie Storey).
Gene attended John R. Harris Elementary School, Deady Junior High School and Milby Senior High School. The family lived at 8513 Gibbon in Denver Harbor, later moved to Harding Street in Ludwigs Farm and finally moved to 2611 Preston in Pasadena. After graduating high school in 1951, he enlisted in the US Air Force. He was going to join the Navy, but his brother, K.R., told him he needed to join the Air Force. Gene accepted Christ at the age of 12 at Harrisburg Baptist Church, it was located right beside his high school. He also attended Broadway Baptist Church. Before leaving for Japan, he rededicated his life. Gene met Linda Nell Belk on a blind date and they were married on February 1, 1957. He joined the Houston Police Department and retired after 32 years of service.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Linda Nell; children, Gary Gene and wife, Elaine, Terry Glenn and wife, Sara, and Kimberly Lynn Alexander and husband, Dudley; grandchildren, Christopher Smith, Ashley Robinett (Zach), Kenneth Smith, Philip Smith (Shelby), Ellen Smith (Patrick), Jennifer Smith, Kendal Alexander and Harrison Alexander; and great grandchildren, Trinity Smith, Dahlyla Smith, Theodore Robinett and Cooper Smith.
Graveside services for Gene will be held 3:00 PM on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Forest Park East Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Christopher Smith, Kenneth Smith, Philip Smith, Harrison Alexander, Patrick Maslowski and Zach Robinett. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Gene A.
