ELMA ALLENE BURTON MITCHELL Born January 18, 1926, first child to parents Dewey Thomas Burton and Elsie Madalene Shoemaker in Rome, Indiana. Sister to and preceded in death by Eloise Slama and Dewey C. Burton. Also preceded in death by grandson, Kaleb Austin Dorsey.
Elma attended college at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. It was at Louisville, at age 25 she would meet a handsome soldier at church that would become the love of her life. A couple weeks later on December 8, 1951 they would marry and then sealed for time and all eternity in the St. George LDS Temple. Shortly after the marriage John would leave to serve our country in Korea and Elma would work as a bookkeeper. Together the couple would live many places, although this farm girl always seemed the most relaxed and happy at the beach. The couple would go on to have five children. John preceded her in death after 34 years of marriage. This heartache never slowed Elma down as a woman of great faith and dedication. She severed a full time LDS mission and two Temple missions in Dallas when retiring at 65. In her later years she would continue bookkeeping with her passion for genealogy. She would even teach classes at the local college on the subject helping others discover their heritage.
She leaves behind 5 children, seventeen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and counting. She has always been an example of perseverance. She has served her savor and her family all the days of her life. She was an example of what it truly means to be selfless by always putting others needs before her own.
Elma left this world on July 23, 2016 at 9:25 am. She has always taught us what it means to be a family and to love unconditionally. For this all of her posterity will be eternally grateful.
Family will receive friends for a visitation at the Chapel at Forest Park East Funeral Home on August 6, 2016 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Services start at 12:30 pm. Interment to immediately follow.
