He also leaves behind his nephews Lavoid, Jr. (Buster) and Michael Lewis, and nieces Vicki Casper, Lisa Gant, and Teri Lewis along with other numerous great nieces and nephews. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Margie and Elmer Lewis, and his brother, Lavoid Lewis.
Charlie was a man of conviction. Born on January 17, 1944 in Meridian, MS, he graduated from Meridian High School and furthered his education at the University of Southern Mississippi obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science & Mathematics. Charlie dedicated many years of service to TRW/NASA where he worked on the Apollo Missions. Subsequently he joined Shell Oil Company as a Systems Analyst where he was one of their lead programmers for all U.S. refineries. He was the lead analyst on their Y2K conversion, a project he was extremely proud of, and retired after nearly 25 years of service. Known for his work ethic and attention to detail, he left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the many lives he touched.
He began working at the age of 12 for the infamous Brookshires drive-in diner in Meridian. It was there he learned how to make shakes and malts (there's a difference) and other desserts, which he made often for his three boys. Charlie enjoyed cooking and working on cars throughout his life. His greatest devotion was to his three boys whom he loved more than anything. They went to numerous Astros games in the Astrodome, including a 22 inning game against the Dodgers lasting over seven hours, the longest at the time in MLB history. Astroworld, camping and the beach were also frequent trips for Charlie and his boys; not to mention, dining at Steak & Ale where the Kensington Club was their absolute favorite meal with James Coney Island being a close second. He enjoyed Westerns and was an avid Clint Eastwood fan.
Charlie’s life will be celebrated intimately by his family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to MD Anderson Cancer Center at the following link.
