Mr. Charles Lewis Govan was born on April 10, 1945, to the late Virgie Mae Manley White Govan and Earnest Porter in Jackson, Tennessee. He departed this earthly life to enter eternal rest on Sunday June 11, 2023, in the comfort of his home in Texas City, Texas surrounded by his loving family. Charles Govan accepted Jesus Christ at an early age.
Charles was a 1963 graduate from Merry High School, in Jackson Tenn. where soon after graduating he joined the U.S. Navy and after completing his tour of duty he returned home. While in the Navy from 1963-1967 he met his first wife Ella Mae Bishop, where they had two children Eric (Everlina) Govan of Meridianville, Alabama and Charla Govan of Huntington, Tenn.
He went on to college at West Tennessee Business College, where he met his current wife who he leaves behind Mattie Govan. They have been married for 50 years. During this union they have three children, Chris Govan of Burnett, TX., Culema Brandon of Texas City, TX., and Casa (Aaron) DeLeon of Texas City, TX. He has two other daughters, Tammie Govan from Cincinnati, Ohio and Tina Govan from Jackson, Tenn.
Charles was a loving and caring husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, cousin, and friend to all. He attended Cerro Gordo Baptist Church in Jackson, Tenn., before he moved with his family to Webster, TX. in 1983. He then joined Sagemont Baptist Church in 1985. He then relocated with his family to League City, TX. where he became a member at Concord Baptist Church.
Charles was preceded in death by his: grandmother Bessie Manley, grandfather Pete Manley, mother Virgie Mae Govan, and birth Father Earnest Porter, adoptive father Freddie B. Govan and sister Brendalyn Curry.
Charles leaves behind his wife and children, and his four sisters and brothers, that live in Jackson, Tenn., Jacqueline (Arthur) Greer, Francine Govan Snowden, Angela (Robert) Prather, Jamaica Johnson of Clarksville, Tenn., and David Curry of Jackson, Tenn. He also leaves behind seventeen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends and a special thanks to his nurses, Nora, Dee, Lee, and Nicki.
Charles was loved by all who knew him, and he will be missed dearly!
A memorial service for Chico will be held Monday, June 19, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Forest Park East Funeral Home & Cemetery, 21620 Gulf Fwy, Webster, Texas 77598, followed by a repass.Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared below for the Govan family.
