Bill George Smith was born on August 1, 1943, in Houston, Texas, to Raymond and Lorene Smith. At the height of World War II, they brought their young son to their "East End" home where he later attended Eastwood Elementary and Jackson Junior Schools. His parents then moved to the Pecan Park neighborhood where he graduated from Milby High School.
At a young age, Bill earned spending money at Lennox BAR-B-Q and was recognized for his God given talent of feeling comfort around him in conversation. This led to be responsible for catering large parties for Lennox. His family taught him discipline, independence, and work ethic that Bill carried throughout his life. Bill was involved in Little League Baseball, Boy Scouts, and paper routes. His spiritual growth came from his mother and father with the family Sunday church participation.
When the family moved to Pecan Park in 1958, he didn't like it. But if he had not moved, he would not have met a beautiful blonde named Connie Buckalew. Their courtship flourished as they became one, but it was interrupted early as Uncle Sam called! He joined the Texas Army National Guard and proudly served during Vietnam.
Connie and Bill enjoyed their trips together, had fun gambling, and watching sports like golf and baseball. He also like to hunt and fish and work out in their yard. Bill was always tinkering with his tools on lawnmowers and cars. He would help anybody that needed it. Bill was so thrifty, he still drove a 1999 Toyota with over 400,000 miles on it. Some of his main purchases were shoes and clothes; which he had more of than Connie!
Bill worked for several local and national railroad companies through the local unions for over 30 years and he knew every switch and railyard within 50 miles of Houston. Bill's life came to a tragic and abrupt end on March 22nd. After a fall at their home in Manvel and with unsuccessful attempts to bring him back to consciousness for almost two weeks, Bill passed late Friday night.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother. And is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years Connie Buckalew; his brother Ray Bob Smith and wife Judy Smith and his 3 nephews Louis, Matthew, and Mark. As most of you know Bill was a kind and giving man; he will be dearly missed by all.
A visitation for Bill will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a funeral service to start at 2:00 p.m. and then followed by a committal service. All services will be held at Forest Park East Funeral Home and Cemetery, located at 21620 Gulf Freeway, in Webster, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Bill's name to The Wounded Warriors or St. Jude's.
