Barbara Jean Breeden, age 91, of Houston, Texas passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2024. She was born in Willis, Texas on April 15, 1932 to Olly Jeff Helton and Olive Owens Helton. She was married to Robert C. Breeden for 66 years. Barbara moved to Houston from her small hometown in Willis in 1954. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone in what was the tallest building in Houston. She put through the first transatlantic call, which was documented by her picture in the Houston Post.
In 1955, she met Bob Breeden on a blind date. True love, they married one month later. They bought one of the first houses in Sagemont, where the first gathering for what would be Sagemont Church was held. Barbara loved singing in the choir and teaching the girls in G.A.'s. She was an accomplished artist and would paint all night. She was the first in Houston to decorate clothing, especially denim. Women would buy it right off her body.
She had a mighty golf swing and loved to play with the ladies at Baywood Country Club. She was an amazing gardener with the greenest thumbs. She was an amazing Godly mother to her children. She was truly a Proverbs 31 woman.
Barbara was survived by her daughter Brenda Breeden Ortiz, her son Robert C. Breeden II and his fiance April Carson, her nephews: Reggie Carroll and his wife Cindy, and Donald Ray Helton and his wife Sherry, as well as her great nephew Les Carroll. She was preceded by beloved husband Bob, Father Olly Jeff Helton, Mother Olive Owens Helton, Father-in-law Marvin Breeden, Mother-in-law Maureen Breeden, Brothers: O.J. Helton, Stanford Helton, and Emmett Helton, Sisters: Fannie B. Carroll, Olly Mae Helton, Dolly Lee Helton and Doris Ann Martin.
