Mary Ellen McCarthy (née Schatz) died peacefully at her home with her family and friends on March 19, 2014 at the age of 91. She is survived by her husband John S. of 67 years, their children David McCarthy (Caroline), Mary Louise McGuire (Michael) grandchildren Maeve McCarthy, Kathryn and Meaghan McGuire. She was the only living sibling of the Schatz family and was a “favorite aunt “ to a loving extended family. She was a talented chef and homemaker, and loved entertaining. She especially loved baking cookies with her grandchildren.
Born May 23, 1922, Mary Ellen lived most of her life in Webster Groves. She attended Bristol School, Webster Groves High School and Camp Miniwanca in Michigan. She lived her life by the camp motto “My own self at my very best all the time”. Mary Ellen earned a Bachelors and Masters degrees in Drama from Northwestern University. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity (Upsilon Chapter). Her association with Kappa was very important to her and she served as alumnae president in both St. Louis and Dayton Ohio.
Mary Ellen had a strong interest in the Arts, and was a season ticket holder to the St. Louis Symphony, The Repertory Theatre and Stages St. Louis. She spent many years learning the intricacies of Danish embroidery. She opened a small retail store in Kirkwood and taught stitchery classes. She was a member of Algonquin Golf Club, an avid golfer and shot a “hole-in-one” in 1999.
Mary Ellen was a devoted Member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 3rd. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 9 S. Bompart Avenue in Webster Groves. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Emmanuel Church Foundation, The Emmanuel Episcopal Church Food Center or the American Youth Foundation.
