Waynesville-Mildred James Mathis, 85, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 24, 2016, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Mildred was born in Georgia, to William and Velda James Mitchell on April 30, 1931. Mildred was known for her love of children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved painting art. Mildred was a member of Barberville Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, James Leroy Mathis; brother, Tommy Mitchell; son-in-law, Steve Caldwell; and special granddaughter, Nichole Mathis Reeves. Mildred is survived by her three daughters, Debbie Caldwell of Clyde, Melanie Cutshaw (James) of Waynesville, and Sherri Green (Billy) of Summerville, South Carolina; a sister, Shirley Gaddis of Hickory, North Carolina; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, September 26, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Reverend Kris Estep officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Mildred’s daughter, Debbie Caldwell.
