Karen was born in Rockville Centre, NY on March 20, 1946, to loving parents Alphon Nicholas Ege and Mary Rose Walsh Ege. Karen is survived by her sister Judy Doran (Rick, deceased), and her brother Kevin Ege (Sue), her 5 children and 10 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Patricia Lareau and brother-in-law Aldon Lareau, brother-in-law Richard Doran, daughter-in-law Roxanne Caputo, niece Donna Russo, and grandchildren Kyle Caputo and Katie Belle Caputo.
Karen grew up in a close-knit family and enjoyed a loving and happy childhood in Syosset, NY with her parents and three siblings, Judy, Pat, and Kevin. After graduating from St. Dominic’s High School, she earned her Bachelor of Nursing degree from St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing. After nursing school, Karen married Joseph Caputo (deceased) and lived in Miami Beach, Boca Raton, and Boynton Beach, Florida. In her later years she moved to North Carolina to be with her daughters. Karen enjoyed caring for others and was proud of her 40-year nursing career, but always said her proudest accomplishment and greatest joy was raising her 5 children, Michael Caputo (Ramona), Michelle Caputo (Tim), David Caputo (Roxanne, deceased), Daniel Caputo (Brooke), Lisa Eberhardt (Adam). She was blessed to go on to extend her love to 12 grandchildren.
Karen was a kind and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, Nana, and friend. She was happiest cooking and baking for her family and friends, making art and homemade cards, and knitting, sewing, and crocheting blankets for her children and grandchildren. Karen had a beautiful singing voice and always carried a song in her heart. She had a wonderful sense of humor and took pleasure in the little things. She loved and rescued many animals in her life and was a member of several animal welfare and nature conservation organizations. The world is a bit better for her being here. She was a friend to all, lit any room she entered with love, and had a heart as big as the sky. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of life at Unity Center of The Blue Ridge in Mills River, NC, Saturday, July 30, 11:00 AM. A reception will immediately follow the service. Masks are encouraged by the family
