James Harold Green “Loving Pa” Maggie Valley – James Harold Green age 87 won his long battle with Alzheimer’s and entered into eternal peace and rest on September 15, 2015 at the NC State Veterans Home in Black Mountain. Harold was a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He was a native of Haywood County where he had lived most of his life. He was born May 3, 1928 in the Fines Creek Community, as the second son of the late Marvin C. and Elizabeth Ferguson Green. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by an infant son, Charles; two brothers Donald B. Green and Rev. Marvin C. Green, Jr. Harold served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Afterwards he worked for 28 years as an electrician for Dayco Corporation where he retired in 1990. During retirement he enjoyed farming sheep and cattle in addition to belonging to the Haywood County Cattleman’s Association. Harold was a member of the Waynesville Masonic Lodge #259 AF & AM, NC Grand York Rite Body, the Oasis Shriners, and also a member of First Baptist Church of Maggie Valley. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ruth Mehaffey Green; daughter Becky and her husband Randy Peterson of Swannanoa; son Mark Wayne and his wife Mary O’Donnell Green of Asheville; the pride and joy of his life: his four grandchildren Daniel Green, Kara Peterson, Kelly Peterson, and Keegan Peterson and wife Susan; two brothers Johnny Green of Easley, SC and Kenneth Green of Fines Creek. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday, September 18, 2015 in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Reverend Ricky Mason officiating. Burial will follow in the Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. Masonic grave-side rites will be conducted. Masons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Stokey Caldwell, Paul Mehaffey, Jack Campbell, Kent Taylor, Dick Young, Jim McGaha, Lee Finger, and David Greene. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Thursday, September 17, 2015 at the funeral home in Waynesville, NC. The family is grateful for the caring and competent services provided by Memory Care, Clare Bridge, and especially the Delta Wing at NC State Veterans Home during his battle with Alzheimer’s. The knowledge and understanding that lie beneath the comfort and compassion has been a blessed gift to Harold and his family.
