Edith Metcalf McCracken Edith Metcalf McCracken received her heavenly promotion Monday, June 22, 2015. Born in Jackson County, NC, December 31, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Marion Alexander Metcalf and Daisy Frizzell Metcalf. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Carl McCracken, Jr., her brother, Marion Metcalf, Jr., her daughter, Shirley McCracken Border, and her son-in-law, Scott Border. Edith loved playing the piano, organ and accordion. She started playing the piano at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in the Dix Creek Community in 1941. After marrying Carl McCracken, Jr. and moving to the Saunook community in 1948, she played the piano, accordion and organ at Pleasant Balsam Missionary Baptist Church from 1948 until the spring of 2015. She was also a Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Balsam Church for over 30 years. She enjoyed sewing and crafting. She won several blue ribbons at the NC State Fair for garments she had sewn. She was a charter member of the Haywood County Home Demonstration Club. She worked as an organist at Garrett Funeral Home. Edith was an all-star basketball player at Bethel High School. She played center, and she was on the Bethel girls’ basketball team that were undefeated for 3 years. After graduating high school, she also played on Enka and Dayco’s basketball teams. She was a member of the Eastern Star of the Waynesville Masonic Lodge and the Gideons International Auxillary. She is survived by her son, Tim McCracken, and his wife Tracy of Saunook; her sister, Ina Jones, of Dix Creek, her brother Howard Metcalf, and his wife Wanda, of Canton; her granddaughter, Elissa Brown, and her husband, Luke, of Salisbury, NC; and her great-grandsons, Noah and Mason Brown of Salisbury, NC. Funeral services will be at 2 PM on Thursday, June 25, 2015 in the Chapel of Garrett Funeral Home with Reverend Bobby Downs officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 PM to 2 PM on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Green Hill Cemetery.
