

Homer E. “Shaf” Shaffer age 91 of Morgantown, WV, formerly of Waynesburg died Monday, September 3, 2012 in Windy Hill Village at Kingwood, WV., He was born October 22, 1920 in a cabin at Sines, Maryland, a son of the late Emra C. and Dorothy Mayle Shaffer.
He earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree at West Virginia University where he was a three year letterman in baseball. Mr. Shaffer worked with the Atheltic Department at West Virginia University for 53 years. He served as the scoreboard operator for football games for 47 years and basketball games for 35 years, for a total of 278 consecutive games.
Mr. Shaffer worked as a high school teacher and coach in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. He coached two undefeated football teams to league championships. He also coached league championship teams in, basketball, and baseball.
He retired from the Central Greene School District where he taught drivers education for many years. He continued teaching driving privately until the age of 88.
Surviving are a daughter Lori and son-in-law Carl McCue Jr. of Morgantown; a son Todd Shaffer of Waynesburg; two brothers, Harlen Shaffer of Maryland and Galen Shaffer of Texas; two sisters, Arlene Metheny of Maryland and Ann Taylor of West Virginia; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Deceased are his wife Helen Jo Robinson Shaffer; a son Timothy H. Shaffer; brothers Jim and Ross Shaffer; and sisters Twila Canipe and Hester Bohon.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High St., Waynesburg. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 7, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church 112 North Richhill St., Waynesburg with Rev. Gary Grau officiating followed by burial at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Morgantown, WV. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Timothy H. Shaffer Memorial Fund c/o PNC Bank 77 West High St., Waynesburg, PA 15370.
