George A. Morris

He was born August 31, 1931 in Amwell Township, Washington County, a son of the late Allen Kenneth and Ruth Roche Morris.

He was a graduate of Waynesburg High School and served in the U. S. Army in the Korean War.

On November 22, 1950 he married Carolyn Webster Morris, who survives.

Mr. Morris worked at his father’s saw mill and as an equipment operator for Jack Williams Excavating. As the owner Morris Excavating and Contracting he excavated and landscaped numerous home sites in Waynesburg and the surrounding area. He constructed the first spring development for livestock in Greene County and many others afterward. He also operated Grindstone Acres, a farm specializing in Hereford cattle and horses.

He was a member of the Fairall United Methodist Church and was formerly a member of the Coallick United Methodist Church where he served as the Sunday School Superintendent.

Mr. Morris was an active member of the Horseman’s Association of Greene County for many years, serving as show manager and course designer for the hunter and jumper classes. He promoted horsemanship with young folks in the community by providing horses to ride and transporting them to shows throughout the area.

He originated the Lawn and Garden Tractor Pull at the Greene County Fair which he supervised for many years.

Mr. Morris was a member of the American Legion Post 330 in Waynesburg. He was a past member of Elks Lodge, Loyal Order of Moose, and Veterans of Foreign Wars all in Waynesburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife are 6 sisters, June Sloan of Cleveland, OH, JoAnn (Earl) Taylor of Morgantown, WV, Nancy (Allen) Harry of Melbourne, FL, Virginia (William) McNeely of Waynesburg, Martha Todorov of Waynesburg, and Brenda (Thad) Ninnemann of Mills River, NC; one brother, Robert K. (Carolyn) Morris of Waynesburg; several nieces and nephews; and two god-daughters, Edith Woods of Waynesburg and Helen Higgins of State College.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High St., Waynesburg and from 10 to 11 a.m., the hour of services on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at the Fairall United Methodist Church, 583 White Barn Road, Waynesburg, with Rev. Ron Geisler and Rev. Kathy K. Higgins officiating. Interment will follow in Fairall Cemetery with graveside military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 330, Veterans of Foreign Wars 4793, and Disabled American Veterans 123, all of Waynesburg.
