Slim was born May 24, 1917 in Sumrall, MS, a son of Adolph and Audrey Sumrall. He was a twin and the last surviving member of 10 brothers and sisters.
During the depression Slim joined the CCC’s and arrived in Uniontown, much to his surprise and amazement in the middle of a snowstorm.
Like so many from the greatest generation, two days after Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Navy. He spent the next 4 years in Submarines in the South Pacific. He received a presidential citation for heroism in action on the USS Jack.
Slim worked for West Penn Power Company, starting as a lineman in Greensburg in 1947, retiring in 1982 as operating superintendent of the Jefferson Division.
His beloved wife of 52 years, Mary Louise Heston Sumrall, preceded him in death in 2000. Also preceding him in death is a grandson, Jeffrey Kempert.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan Stankewich (Joe) of New Alexandria and Carol L. Lorentz (J.L. Goslin) of Waynesburg; a grandson, Byron J. Lorentz (Kristin); and several nieces and nephews in Mississippi and Louisiana.
The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers of Amedisys Hospice for their help and kindness.
There will be no public viewing at Slim’s request. Interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 W. High St. Waynesburg, PA. Condolences may be offered at www.behmfh.com
