Mr. Harner was born on November 3, 1949 in Waynesboro, and was a son of the late William Berkeley Harner, Sr., and Marie Elizabeth (Brown) Harner. Berkeley was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church. He started his career working in print shops at the age of 14 at Humphries Press. Later, he worked for the News Virginian in sales, Detamore Printing, The Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, and the copy center at Washington and Lee. He greatly enjoyed hunting and gardening. Mr. Harner also enjoyed classic cars and tractors. Mr. Harner was a volunteer and life member of the Waynesboro Fire Department and was also a member of the Barren Ridge Ruritan Club.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Vanessa Pitcher Harner.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Harner is survived by his son, William Berkeley “Berk” Harner, III and wife Lillian; sister, June Baum and husband Harry of Afton; grandsons, Stuart and Evan Harner; sister in law, Sharon Coffey; nieces, Kimberly Hassinger, Kristen Baum; and a nephew, John Howard.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Rodney Harner.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, with Pastor Michael Reaves officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Lutheran Church.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5 until 7 PM at the funeral home.
