Willi was born in Rodalben, Germany to Matilde Vogel and William Altenauer on September 18th, 1945. Willi served in the German Airforce as a young man, where he learned the mechanics trade. After leaving the military, he was a sailor, working in the engine rooms of big ships for several years. He then started working on cars and trucks, getting a master’s degree in diesel mechanics. In 1995, Willi moved to the United States and from 2001 to 2019, he owned German Master Works in Staunton. Willi was a self-described “grease monkey” who loved to work on cars and was fascinated with diesel trains and aircraft.
