Born August 17, 1944 in Augusta County, he was the son of the late Jessie Leo and Patsy Hilda (Fretwell) Balsley.
Steven was a U.S. Army Veteran having served his country honorably during the Vietnam War. He worked as a tool and die maker for over 35 years. An avid outdoorsmen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Ellen (Hudson) Balsley.
Survivors include his loving children, Cynthia Stephanie Balsley and Steven Layman Balsley (LaLa Marie); step children, John David Smith, Jr. (Roxanne Gross) and Tony Smith (Stephanie); grandchildren, Logan Balsley, Megan Smith and Benjamin Smith; a number of extended family members; as well as his beloved dogs, Charlie, Mini and Hobo.
Following cremation, the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
