Michael "Mike" John Tierney

Michael “Mike” John Tierney passed away Friday, June 6, 2014 at Summit Square Health Care Unit of Waynesboro, after a valiant 9 year battle with cancer. He was born February 19, 1947 in St. Louis, MO to the late John Tierney and his surviving mother Alice Krieger Tierney. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Virginia for 29 years, which they celebrated this past April 6, 2014. He received a PhD in Math from St. Louis University and earned a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Virginia. He taught at Maryville University in St. Louis, MO and was a professor of Math and Computer Science at Virginia Military Institute where he retired after 27 years. During his service there he was the Department Head for 9 years. Mr. Tierney attended the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro. Survivors also include his son John Tierney and wife Connie, and 2 adored grandchildren, Madison “Maddy”, 6 and Joaquin Tierney, 3 all of Corpus Christi, TX. He was preceded in death by his uncle Frank Krieger who was a father-figure, playing an important role in his life A service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jim Young officiating.
