Mary Margaret Simmons Tomes

She was born on October 10, 1933, in Highland County, a daughter of the late Charlie P. and Eva Moats Simmons. She worked for Roses Department Store for 16 ½ years.

MeMe lived a simple, but rich life filed with nurturing and caring love reflected in her plentiful garden. Waynesboro will miss bountiful pear trees, apple trees and the wonderful woman standing in the garden each morning at sunrise. She was a great wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbor who will be greatly missed, but whose legacy will last forever. No one left her kitchen hungry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Leslie Tomes Jr.; a brother, Burley Simmons; brothers-in-law, Herbert Varney and Doug Tomes.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Poulin and husband, Len "Lenny", of Lyndhurst, Gwendolyn "Gwen" Allen and husband, Carl "Big Andy", of Waynesboro; a son, Elbert LeRoy Tomes and wife, Mae, of Stuarts Draft; a brother, Charles W. Simmons of Monterey; a sister, Lona Mae Wolfe of Covington; two sisters-in-law, LaWassa Varne and Betty Tomes, both of Huntington, West Virginia; three grandchildren, Phillip Andrew Tomes "Andy", Kimberly Anne Allen, Mary Elizabeth Allen; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2012, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes by Pastor Timothy Arthur. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Len Poulin, Carl Allen, Andy Tomes, Scott Gregory, Don Cullen and David Balser.

Honorary pallbearers will be family and friends attending the service.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, 201 West Broad Street Waynesboro, Virginia 22980.
