Born October 7, 1932 in Stuarts Draft, he was the son of the late Paul Thomas and Helen (Tisdale) Harris.
Joe was a faithful member of Forest Chapel Church of the Brethren, Crimora. As a church member, he served as a deacon and trustee, taught Sunday School and was currently apart of the church board. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served his country during the Korean War while stationed in Germany. He was also a member of the Waynesboro VFW Post 2424. Joe had been employed by Holsom Bakery as a truck driver where he obtained the CB Handle nickname “Dough Boy” and in later years his nickname stuck with him as he drove for UPS. Some of his greatest joys in life were camping, hunting, fishing, traveling, spending time with his grandchildren, collecting “Dough Boy” figurines and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Justin Scott Harris; sister, Frances H. Brown; and two brothers, Elwood M. Harris and Paul T. “Tom” Harris, Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Phyllis (Estes) Harris; son, Mark Harris and wife, Christine of Crimora; granddaughters, Stacy and Anna Harris; dear friends, Sharon Estes and Karen Arey; brothers, Samuel R. Harris and wife, Mary of Mt. Sidney, Larry Harris and wife, Gloria of Waynesboro and Melvin Harris of Middletown; sisters, Sue Wagner and husband, Elwood of Staunton and Jean Sparks of Stuarts Draft; brother-in-law, Melton Estes and wife, Yvonne of Crimora; sister-in-law, Dorethia Robinson and husband, Jerry of Crimora; a number of nieces and nephews that he thought of as his own; special neighbors, Warren and Ellen Arey.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Augusta Memorial Park with Charles Litzenberg officiating. Military honors will be provided by the VFW Post 2424 and assisted by the American Legion Post 340.
Active pallbearers will be Melton Estes, Barth Estes, Scott Harris, Steve Harris, Robbie Chrissman, Kelly Walker and Barry Robinson.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Forest Chapel Church of the Brethren with Pastor David Stewart officiating.
Friends may view and sign the guestbook for Mr. Harris between 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St.
