Born September 5, 1936 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late David Herschell and Delphia Mary (Miller) Wright.
John was a graduate of Waynesboro High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served his country honorably and rising to the rank of SP4. After returning home from the military, John attended and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1964 having earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed by the former E.I. DuPont for over 30 years where he worked as a mechanical engineer. He attended First Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro where he severed as an elder for many years. John was a member of the Waynesboro Elks Lodge #2270 and worked as a volunteer at the Waynesboro Visitor Center. He enjoyed playing golf and cheering on the Virginia Tech Hokies in sports.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Kelly Wright; his second wife, Pamela Champion Wright; brothers, D.H. Wright, Rudolph “Rudy” Wright and Norwood “Peaches” Wright.
Survivors include his two loving children, John Sanford Wright of Wilson, NC and Kelly (Wright) Dail and husband, Kenneth of Chester, Va; step son, Robbie Robinson of Fairfax, Va; step-daughter, Sandy (Robinson) Shearer and husband, Brad of Redding, CA; grandchildren, Steven and Lynn Dail and Kaitlyn and Will Shearer; sisters, Nancy Wise of Camden, SC and Patricia Clough of Lynchburg, VA; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St., with the Rev. George W. Chapman III officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park with military honors.
Active pallbearers will be Steven Dail, Lynn Dail, Robbie Robinson, Sandy Shearer, Chris Averill and Patrick McCarthy.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017 at the funeral home.
