She was born in Waynesboro, on July 19, 1946, daughter of the Louise G. Thomas, of Waynesboro, and the late Raymond F. Smith, Sr.
Joan was a member of Second Presbyterian Church. She worked at Neurological Rehab Associates, the Animal Hospital of Waynesboro, and the Comfort Inn. Joan was a Notary Public and was very good at shorthand. She was a good artist and writer and often had her works published in the letter to the editor section of the newspaper. Joan was fond of Thomas Kinkade paintings and loved dogs and wolves.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Henry Page Thomas; and brother, Raymond F. Smith, Jr.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 45 years, Thomas Martin; sons, Jason and Michael Martin of Waynesboro; brother, Steve Smith; a number of nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Max.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 West Main Street, with Pastors John McDonald and Todd Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Fred Zeh, Kevin Martin, Eric Martin, Terry Adams, Roger Bryant, Billy Wrenn, and Hugh Woods.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. today, Friday, July 29, 2011, at the funeral home.
