He was born in Stuarts Draft on June 29, 1944, a son of the late Elmer Ray and Hazel May (Chandler) Fretwell.
Jerry served his country in the United States Army as a military policeman.
He retired as President of Valley Building Supply in 2007 and opened Fretwell Bass in Staunton in 2008 from which he retired in 2017.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Harris.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane (Lowry) Fretwell; sons, Todd Fretwell and wife Amy, Jon Fretwell and wife Crystal; daughter, Anita LaPorte and husband Jeff; his adored grandchildren, Kala Fretwell, Bethany Fretwell, Megan Fretwell, Gabby LaPorte and Jackson LaPorte. He also leaves behind the mother of his children, Fay Chandler Fretwell; brother-in-law, Burnie Lowry; six nieces as well as numerous friends, musicians and golfing buddies.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at the Waynesboro Elks Lodge, 1700 Harvard Rd., Waynesboro, Va.
The family will receive friends following the service where a reception will follow. Friends may also call at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elks National Foundation, c/o the Waynesboro Elks Lodge, P.O. Box 246, Waynesboro, Va. 22980.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes and Crematory.
