There aren’t enough words to sum up my feelings at this time, at the loss of my dear friend, Jerry Fretwell. We played many shows together, jammed hour after hour, laughed, cried, argued, and loved. He used to call me his personal banjo picker, a compliment I never felt worthy of. We made many great memories, I will carry these with me always. Rest in Peace my dear friend. Until we meet again in that great bluegrass band in the sky, my thoughts are with your dear MaryJane, “Janie”. 

So sorry to hear of Jerry's passing.  I've known him professionally since his days at Lowes and have enjoyed his and Mary Jane's company many times over the years mostly at various music venues where Jerry was playing or just having a grand time.

Jerry forever changed the music culture in Staunton by being a wonderful friend inviting all to be part of the fun of making music. He and Mary Jane showed us all what a loving couple looked like. Our sincerest condolences to his friends and family. He will leave a big hole in our lives.

Mary Jane and family.  I'm so sorry to hear of Jerry's passing.  He was always ready to play his bass and share his talent with those of us who enjoyed listening.  I will remember him fondly.  Comfort and peace be with you at this time of loss of your loved one.   

Jerry was like a brother to me.

  I have so many fond memories of Jerry.  Whether it was work, our trips to Myrtle Beach or just a round of golf, Jerry could always bring a smile to your face.

Jerald and I grew up within rock throwing distance from each other !! His Mom was my God Mother and I loved her deeply!  Jerald came from slim pickings just like the rest of us from White Hill ! He worked hard and was a very talented person !!  He made his way thru this life by hard work,  by being talented and  his will to take care of those he loved ! He will be missed but  Our Heavenly Father welcomes him home !!

Such a good friend and neighbor.  He will be missed by many.  Rest easy neighbor.  Prayers for comfort and healing to Mary Jane, his family and all who knew him.  

Jerry was one of my great friends dating back to my first days at the Galax Fiddlers festival with Roger Sprung back in the late 1970’s. Later on, when he was selling bass fiddles I would check them out every year until, one year Jerry told me to “check out that blonde bass”. I did just that and after about 5 minutes I told him I had to have it! Best bass fiddle I’ve ever played! I’m going to miss Jerry so much! Rest in peace my friend!

I only new Jerry and Mary Jane for a little while but they were always friendly with everyone, he always made everyone laugh.  He will truly be missed. My prayers go out to Mary Jane and the family.

So very sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing. I have great memories of playing in the band, Gabby Haze, with Jerry. Practicing at Fretwell Bass was a blast and playing  at The Mockingbird with Jerry on bass was very special.  RIP Brother!  - Dan Layman
