Harvey was born in Logan, West Virginia on August 22, 1932 to the late Lawrence Lynn Kelley and Ida Mae (Blevins) Kelley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joy Estes and husband, Carl; brothers, Lawrence (Bud) Kelley and wife, Althea, and Jim Kelley and wife, Pat.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Charlene Kent Kelley; daughters, Cindy Scott of Waynesboro, Susan White and husband, Jonathan of Waynesboro; grandchildren, Zachary White of Bedford, Va, Adam Scott of Waynesboro, Va, Mary Kate White of Lynchburg, Va and Noah Scott of San Diego, CA; sister-in-law, Millie Trent of Waynesboro, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Harvey graduated from Wilson High School, then served in the U.S. Army for two years as a tank mechanic during the Korean War. He joined the Waynesboro Fire Department in 1956 and worked his way up to Fire Chief in 1981. During this time, he also worked many part time jobs at Freed Company, Western Auto and Home IV Care.
Harvey was also a pyrotechnic for The Craft Family Shooters/American Fireworks for many years, setting off fireworks for the Summer Extravaganza in Waynesboro. He retired in 1997 from the fire department after 41 years of service and volunteered with the Waynesboro Fist Aid Crew. He always worked hard to provide for his family and to give back to the community, and many times accompanied Susan to deliver Meals on Wheels. If you knew him well, you know he was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins!
The family wishes to express much love and appreciation to Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah staff, especially his buddy and hospice nurse, Lauren Gochenour and Megan for their compassionate care, his dear friend, Dr. Christopher Heck, and to Shenandoah House for going above and beyond taking care of dad and also the family to the very end. This is not goodbye dad, but see you later!
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St., Waynesboro with Rev. Beth Estes Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Bob Donaldson, Bruce Belew, Roy Robinson, Timmy Bradley, Danny McCormick, Tim Melton, Robert Thomas and Wayne Clark.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2022 at the funeral home.
